Hello and thank you for your interest in the section of CBT Nuggets that is completely dedicated to me: The Jeremy Cioara Bio!

My journey into the world of technology began in the late 1980s when I stumbled on a Timex Sinclair “computer.” Actually, it was a free gift for attending a presentation on timeshare condominiums. This little all-in-one box connected to a television through an RCA cable, and stored its programs on an audio cassette. I will never forget the screen stating, “Please change cassette to Side B” when I reached a certain point in the program. Isn’t it amazing how far things have come!?! Anyhow, after my Timex Sinclair no longer entertained me, I purchased a Commodore Amiga 1000 computer which actually used software and technology that was far ahead of its time (these computers were used to make Disney movies until recently). I used this computer for the next five years and was heavily involved in video editing and maintaining my own Bulletin Board System (BBS) called Ami-Exchange. What a hobby! This is what truly lit my passion for technology.

My professional career began at a company called MicroAge. In the two years that I spent with this company, I worked in at least six different departments ranging from help desk support to network supervisor. I built computers, configured networks, and took support calls. The most valuable lesson learned at this company was just how much I did not know! I became a sponge; sucking up as much information as I could. One day, when I came into work, my boss asked me, “Aren’t you supposed to be in class?” I was never one for checking messages, so I said, “Sure! Where do I go?” Needless to say (long story short), I ended up sitting in on my first Microsoft certification class. I was mesmerized! It was the first time I had ever heard about an “Em-Cee-Ess-E” (believe it or not, I did not know that this was an acronym…MCSE). It was also the first time I saw someone TEACHING a certification class. I thought to myself, “That would be the coolest job you could EVER have!”

That thought still rings true today. Teaching IS the coolest job you could ever have! To sum up the rest of my background…After MicroAge, I became a certification monkey attaining complete Novell (CNE), Microsoft (MCSE), and Cisco (CCIE) certifications. I began to train full-time and consulted with US West (now Qwest) to deploy their DSL network. I have authored for multiple magazines, and published a book for Course Technology called Microsoft ISA Server 2000. After writing a 500+ page book, I decided…never to write again. However, it was quite an experience!

Overall, I have been very blessed and am honored for the opportunity to train in the personal style of CBT Nuggets! Thanks again for taking the time to read my bio.

Performing One-Step Lockdown With Security Device Manager

To pass the 640-553 Implementing Cisco IOS Network Security (IINS) exam and become CCNA Security certified, you’ll have to master the ins and outs of the Security Device Manager – SDM. (You also must become a CCNA first – that’s a prerequisite for all three additional CCNA certifications.)

SDM is a Cisco GUI that can perform tasks from creating VPNs to carrying out a security audit on your router. In today’s CCNA Security tutorial, we’ll take a look at the process of performing a lockdown on a router.

I have no first-hand knowledge of this, but when a prison goes into lockdown, everyone and everything is locked up so there will be no trouble. When you perform a lockdown on a router, you’ll enabling and disabling certain network services – so there will be no trouble!

Performing a lockdown does not guarantee the router is 100% safe, but it’s going to be more secure than it was before. Later in this tutorial, we’ll talk about how a lockdown can actually cause trouble – so do read this tutorial to learn how to use SDM for a lockdown, but do not rush to work tomorrow to run one!

The first golden rule of SDM: If you need to carry out a task, always start by clicking the Configure button. After doing so, I’ll click on Security Audit.

SDM does give excellent descriptions of the task you’re about to carry out, and the Security Audit section is no exception. We’ll be shown two options on the Security Audit screen, with the first being the Security Audit option itself.

The option below that is to run a one-step lockdown.

So our options at present are to run a security audit, after which we’ll be given the opportunity to implement the audit’s suggestions, and a one-step lockdown, which places our router in lockdown with no input or further permission needed from us.

I’ll choose the one-step lockdown, and here’s the next screen:

As I always say, when a Cisco router or program asks you “Are you sure?”, don’t just click it – think about it!

And when you see a window like this that not only asks you if you’re sure you want to perform this task, but also tells you how to roll the changes back if you don’t like them, you better really consider what you’re about to do!

Having said that, we’ll pick up the next part of this CCNA Security tutorial by saying “Yes” to the above question and then seeing what happens!

To become CCNA Security certified, you’ve got to first be a CCNA. The new CCNA certifications are going to present huge opportunities to those who are ready to take advantage of those opportunities – so if you’re not CCNA certified at present, you need to get started now!

There’s never been a better time to become a CCNA, and with these additional opportunities, there’s never been a more important time to do so!

Five Minutes From Now, You Can Be Studying For CCNA Exam Success Just As Thousands Of Other CCNA Candidates Around The World Have – With Chris Bryant, CCIE #12933 With You Every Step Of The Way – With The Ultimate CCNA Exam Study Package!

Tutorials And Articles To Help You Pass The 640-553 IINS Exam

By Chris Bryant, CCIE #12933

Of the three new CCNA certifications – Security, Voice, and Wireless – the CCNA Security cert may well be the most valuable of all.

Security admins are in huge demand now, and according to a recent study performed by Forrester Consulting for Cisco, that demand is literally going to almost double over the next five years.

Presently, 46% of companies included in the survey have at least one dedicated security network admin, and over the next five years that percentage will reach 80%.

To take the 640-553 Implementing Cisco IOS Network Security (IINS) exam and become CCNA Security certified, you must first be a CCNA – so if you’re not working on the valuable certification already, you need to get started so you can take advantage of the opportunities presented by these new certifications.

In the days and weeks ahead, I’ll be adding exclusive articles and tutorials for each of the three new CCNA certifications. That includes video presentations exclusive to The Bryant Advantage website.

The Security videos and tutorials will be posted on this page, with the CCNA Wireless and CCNA Voice tutorials posted on their respective dedicated pages. Bookmark all three and make sure to read the blog or subscribe to the newsletter to be the first to know about these free tutorials!

The new CCNA certifications do NOT replace the current CCNA exams – they’re additional certifications that you can only acquire after earning your NA.

The numbers don’t lie – network admins who have practical Security knowledge and certification will have a huge advantage in the years ahead over those who do not. This is a huge opportunity and you need to be ready to take advantage.

I’ve sneaked a peek at the CCNA Security exam blueprint, and I can tell you that it’s very heavy on the Security Device Manager (SDM), a Cisco router GUI that allows you to configure many router features via this GUI rather than at the CLI.

Having used SDM quite a bit, and having written about it for the CCNP ISCW Study Package, I can tell you that SDM can truly help keep your network more secure. I’m glad to see it on the CCNA Security exam.

And believe me, my CCNA Security Study Package will be packed with SDM screen shots!

CCNA Security exam topics also include….

Defending against Worms, Viruses, Trojan Horses, and other network attacks

Performing a security audit with SDM

Using SDM to lock the router down (I’ll show you when you should do this – and when you shouldn’t!)

Using encrypted password, privilege levels, the Supervisor role, and other CLI-based defenses

Configuring RADIUS, TACACS+, AAA, named ACLs

… and quite a few other topics that we’ll examine here in the days and weeks ahead.

I’m really glad to see Cisco respond to the needs of today’s networks by offering CCNA Security certification – and this is a huge opportunity for all network admins.

I’m a tough interview, and I’d certainly hire someone with those qualifications…. and if they already worked for me, they’d get the next available promotion.

I’ve been a part of the certification community for well over 12 years, and these new CCNA certifications are the best change I’ve seen in a long time… and I have no doubt they’ll prove to be the most valuable as well. In my humble opinion, the CCNA Security certification will prove to be the most valuable of the three.

So if you’re not CCNA certified at present, you need to get started!

Here’s a new CCNA Security tutorial for you, as we begin our look at how to use Security Device Manager (SDM) to put a router into one-step lockdown. We’ll also discuss whether that lockdown is always a good idea!

CCNA Security Exam: Using SDM For One-Step Lockdown

CCNA Security Practice Exam: 10 Questions On NTP And Passwords

Be sure to bookmark this page – in the days and weeks ahead, I’ll have more CCNA Security tutorials for you on this page, including video and written looks at Security Device Manager.

These tutorials will help you get ready for the release of my CCNA Security Study Package in September as well! Click that link to find out how you can start studying in less than five minutes from now for CCNA Security exam success!

You’ll also find free tutorials on on the CCNA Voice exam and CCNA Wireless exam pages, too – so bookmark those pages and come back often!

Understanding Intrusion Prevention and Detection
Cisco provides intrusion detection and prevention in a variety of ways in its current security portfolio. You might add this
powerful tool to your network via a dedicated hardware appliance known as a sensor, or you might add this functionality
using a network module inserted into a router or a switch. However you decide to implement the technology, the goal is
the same: to take some action based on an attack introduced to your network. This action might be to alert the network
administrator via an automated notification, or it might be to prevent the attack from dropping the packet at a device.
Intrusion Prevention Versus Intrusion Detection
Intrusion detection is powerful in that you can be notified when potential problems or attacks are introduced into your
network. Note, however, that detection cannot prevent these attacks from occurring. Detection cannot prevent the attacks
because it operates on copies of packets. Often, these copies of packets are received from another Cisco device (typically
a switch). Sensors operating using intrusion detection are said to be running in promiscuous mode.
Intrusion prevention is more powerful in that potential threats and attacks can be stopped from entering your network, or
a particular network segment. Prevention is possible by the sensor because it is operating inline with packet flows.
IPS/IDS Terminology
You should be aware of many security terms that are related to intrusion detection and prevention technologies.
